Mutual Memorial Cemetery stands as a testament to the rich history of the African American community in Sandy Spring, Maryland. Originally established in 1873 as Cedar Mount Cemetery to serve the Freedman's Village of Sandy Spring, this sacred ground has been carefully preserved and maintained by generations of dedicated community members.
The cemetery was renamed to honor the Sisters of the Mutual Aid Society, an active organization within the Sharp Street Methodist Church who served as early caretakers of these hallowed grounds. Today, the cemetery contains approximately 250 markers and continues to serve the community while preserving the memory of those who came before us.
Historic Significance
Land acquired from Quakers by members of Sharp Street Methodist Church, preserving African American heritage in Montgomery County.
Professional Conservation
93 gravestones professionally conserved in 2018 through a Maryland Historic Trust grant, ensuring preservation for future generations.
Living Tradition
Hand-made concrete markers continue to be created today, carrying on a tradition that spans over 150 years.
